Knowing that you have created something that may help a child discover the joys of reading is especially gratifying – even more so if it has been the first book that child has ever managed to read. When a reader is hooked on a story, his or her reading ability is proven to improve.

Be professional, and try to deliver on time. If despite your best efforts it looks like this is going to be a problem (and it can happen to anyone from time to time), contact your publisher ahead of time – not just the day before. This is an issue with packagers especially, where their profit margins and timescales are very tight. In non-fiction, as with any area of writing for children, there is no excuse for unprofessional behaviour. Writing a book is a lot about being part of a team. It may be true that without the writers there would be no book, but if you want to be treated with respect it is only reasonable to consider the other people working on the same project.

Summing up Never underestimate your young readers; challenge them and make the characters so real that they want to stay with them long after they have finished reading. Make the climax so exciting that readers wish they could shut their eyes but dare not because they have to stay with the characters. Never create an ending that is so unrealistic that the reader feels cheated; children learn from books, and are able to take on board the reality that everything doesn’t always turn out perfectly in life.
