Then I was hopping mad. I stood on the bed, brandished my fists and shouted in my best Midlands accent: ‘Bugger off, you dirty devil. ’ He stopped short and looked surprised. ‘Gee whiz, ’mam, I truly am sorry. ’ He backed out and softly shut the door. I pushed the bed against it and sat there listening to the giggles, the beds creaking and the occasional door slam as each satisfied customer left on either side of the wall. I was tempted to poke a hole in the paper just to satisfy my curiosity but caution prevailed.

She spoiled and petted me, making me into a bad-tempered angry little girl whom no one could handle except her. I can remember kicking her in a fury, because she refused to buy me a live crocodile I saw in the market. On me she poured all the loving care that should have belonged to her starved twin daughters. Yet it was no more disgusting than the gobbets of phlegm that Uncle used to spit out all around the outside lavatory which I would have to scrub and scrape each week.
