1987). Indeed, in some cases tumors are only detected by their mass effect on normal hepatic vasculature and the presence of the central scar, which is hypointense on Tl-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted images (BUTCH et al. 1986) (Fig. 4). These signal intensity features of tumor and scars reflect the histologic tumor components. Because FNH consists mostly of hyperplastic hepatocytes, it is not surprising that the tumor appears isointense to normal liver. The signal intensity of the scar is based on the multiple vascular channels and bile ductules (RUMMENY et al.

Hepatic cysts are usually unilocular and can be solitary or multiple. The cyst wall is 1 mm or less in thickness and usually lined by a simple layer of cuboidal epithelium or, less commonly, squamous or columnar epithelium. The adjacent liver tissue is normal, without fibrosis or inflammation (CRAIG et al. 1989). Hepatic cysts are reported to be present in between 5% and 14% of the population, with a higher prevalence in women (CRAIG et al. 1989). Cysts usually occur without any clinical symptoms and are seen as incidental masses at hepatic imaging or surgery.

Cavernous hemangioma. a Typical (large arrowhead) and atypical appearance (small arrowhead) on heavily T2-weighted (SE 2500/120) image. 1 mmollkg). Note the peripheral nodular enhancement (arrows). c Delayed Tl-weighted FLASH image obtained after Gd-DTPA administration, showing complete fill-in of the small hemangioma (arrow) evident on images obtained with other heavily T2weighted pulse sequences such as fast spin echo (FSE) or ultrafast echoplanar imaging techniques. Several studies indicate that FSE is as reliable in the diagnosis of hemangiomas as conventional SE imaging techniques (GAA et al.
