For more involved maintenance jobs, a chain tool is needed to split the chain if it doesn’t have a split-link, and for any work on the chainrings or bottom bracket, you will need a crank puller. A cartridge bottom bracket will need a bracket remover, hollow-axle cup tool, and a large slim spanner. To replace inner cables, cable cutters will snip off the cable end neatly. Bike shops always use a proper workstand, which holds the bike at a comfortable working height. Workstand prices start at around £50, going up to £100 or more – quite an investment, but worth it in the long run if you’re looking at doing a lot of maintenance and repairs.

For the details of your hub, refer to the original instructions if you still have them, though the procedures are freely available on the internet. On Sturmey Archer three-speed hubs, adjustment should be correct when, in gear two, the end of the indicator rod is flush with the end of the inner axle – you can see this though the window in the axle nut, as shown here. If it isn’t flush, screw the cable barrel adjuster in or out until it is. Another method, if there is no drive at all in gear two, is to put the hub into gear two.

Their big advantage is lower maintenance. The gears are sealed away inside the rear hub, thus protected from wet, dirt and grit. Most hub gears have sealed-in lubrication, which doesn’t need oiling, and they should last longer than the exposed cassette and front and rear mechs of a derailleur system. However, they still need care of the shifter cable, and will occasionally need adjustment. If the gears slip, or there’s no drive at all in certain gears, then it’s adjustment time. This is quite simple, as the only adjustment possible is via the cable.
