The primate, or menstrual, cycle has been well described by Corner ( 1 9 5 2 ) . Since it does not greatly concern us here, it will be sufficient to say that in the human there are no outwardly observable signs at ovulation time. This is in accordance with man's position in the evolutionary scale: as the scale is ascended an increasing domination by the cerebral cortex over the lower brain centres is associated with a corresponding decrease in the manifestation of behavioural patterns of reproduction (Beach, 1 9 4 7 ) .

The Oestrous Cycle We have seen that the basic pattern in most mammals is for ovulation to be followed by formation of a corpus luteum. In a great many species, if pregnancy does not ensue, the corpus luteum regresses and another periodic ovulation occurs, so completing a cycle which then recurs. There are tremendous species differences in detail, however. The primate, or menstrual, cycle has been well described by Corner ( 1 9 5 2 ) . Measurement of fructose content and of fructolysis forms the basis of a valuable test of semen quality ( M a n n , 1 9 4 8 ) . Each species has its own characteristically shaped spermatozoa so that it is even possible to identify animals on the appearance of their sperm, using the ordinary light microscope. Knowledge of their detailed structure has been greatly increased through histochemistry and use of the electron miscroscope. 1) consists of a head portion which contains the nucleus, and a tail.
